What You Need to Know Before Becoming a Real Estate Agent

1. Choosing the Right Real Estate Class

Not all real estate classes are created equal. Before signing up, research the instructors—do they have real-world experience? Do they have a good reputation in the industry? The right course can set the foundation for your career, so choose wisely.

2. The Myth of “Flexibility”

Many people get into real estate thinking it will give them complete flexibility over their schedule. While it’s true that you’re not punching a clock, successful agents work around their clients’ schedules—meaning nights, weekends, and last-minute showings are the norm. If you want to make real money, you’ll need to be available when buyers and sellers need you.

3. The Reality of Success Rates in Real Estate

The numbers don’t lie—real estate is a competitive industry:

  • The top 25% of agents sell more than 78% of the houses.
  • Less than 4% of agents sell more than ten homes per year.
  • The vast majority of agents don’t last more than five years in the industry.

If you want to make it, you need a game plan that goes beyond just passing your exam.

4. Why Mentorship is Key

The most successful agents didn’t build their careers alone. Many of them started by learning from an experienced agent—whether through an official mentorship or by working alongside a top producer. Finding a mentor can help you avoid common mistakes, learn how to navigate transactions, and build a solid client base faster.

5. Successful Agents Are Relationship Builders

The best real estate agents don’t just sell houses—they build relationships. The top agents are always meeting new people, attending networking events, and staying engaged in their communities. They know that real estate is a business built on trust, and they consistently provide value to their clients and contacts.

Should You Become a Real Estate Agent?

If you’re considering real estate as a career, ask yourself:
✅ Am I willing to work evenings and weekends?
✅ Am I comfortable with rejection and competition?
✅ Do I enjoy networking and meeting new people?
✅ Am I willing to continuously learn and adapt to market changes?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, real estate could be a great career for you! But if you’re looking for an easy way to make money with little effort, this might not be the right path.
